Stellenbosch Football Club will travel to Durban this weekend to take on AmaZulu in the opening match of the 2026-27 Betway Premiership season.

While the encounter is regarded as a home fixture for Stellenbosch FC, the match has regrettably once again been moved out of the Western Cape due to a lack of available stadia in the region.

Stellies’ traditional home, Danie Craven Stadium, is unavailable due to the field being prepared for the FISU University World Championship Rugby Sevens, which is only set to get underway from 4-6 September.

Similarly, Athlone Stadium has been made unavailable for the entire week due to the venue serving as a training base for the New Zealand national rugby team, while DHL Stadium is being used for the weekend’s Currie Cup match between the Sharks and the Stormers.

In agreement with AmaZulu, a request was made by Stellenbosch FC to the Premier Soccer League to have the fixture reversed to allow Stellenbosch FC to host its home game in Stellenbosch in January.

This request was deemed unacceptable by the PSL Competition Committee and denied. While Stellenbosch FC acknowledges the decision, it is difficult to reconcile the outcome given the persistent venue challenges currently facing professional football in the Western Cape.

Stellenbosch FC hopes that local stakeholders, together with the PSL, can work collaboratively towards long-term solutions that provide the region’s clubs with the support and infrastructure required to host top-flight football in the province.
