Barker left in awe at Stellies’ Nedbank Cup performance
Steve Barker has revealed that he was left in awe by his side’s performance after recording a resounding 4-0 win over SuperSport United in Saturday’s Nedbank Cup quarter-final clash.
Stellenbosch FC advanced to a second consecutive Nedbank Cup semi-final, and fourth consecutive cup semi-final across all domestic competitions, after claiming a famous 4-0 win over SuperSport United at Danie Craven Stadium on Saturday.
The Maroons claimed the victory following an all-action performance that saw all four of the club’s starting attackers, namely Anicet Oura, Devin Titus, Andre de Jong, and Iqraam Rayners find the back of the net.
“…When I look at a performance like this, to beat a team of SuperSport United’s calibre, with the experienced and quality players they had on the pitch at the start, and to score four goals and not concede, I don’t think enough credit is given to these players,” Barker said.
“They’ve gone 21 games unbeaten now with 16 wins. We’ve scored 40 goals and conceded 10, so they deserve to be in another semi-final, the fourth semi-final in a row, so I’m really, really proud.

“This was one of thee games since I’ve been at this football club that I can look back and say this team has matured, they’ve grown and developed. We didn’t just show fighting quality but also quality with the ball.
“Some of the play and some of the goals we created, and some of the goals we could have scored, left me in awe with the quality that I saw.”
Saturday’s victory has kept Stellenbosch in contention to record a cup double this season – having already won the Carling Knockout – but the coach insists that his side is only focusing on the next game on the calendar.
“We can only take it one game at a time at this stage,” he said. “We’ve got a lot of ambition but there is still a lot to play for in the league as well, with eight league matches and 24 points on the line.

“Next week we are away to Sekhukhune United, followed by a game in Mbombela against TS Galaxy. Those are two really tough away games against two teams that are in really good form.
“We’ll wait to see what the draw holds for us, then put that away, and concentrate on the league fixtures up until the semi-final…”
The draw for the semi-final of the 2024 Nedbank Cup is set to take place on Sunday afternoon following the conclusion of the encounter between TS Galaxy and Chippa United.
Barker’s troops could face either the victor of that encounter, Mamelodi Sundowns, or reigning champions Orlando Pirates in the last-four of the competition.
