Stellenbosch FC striker Iqraam Rayners found the back for South Africa during a six-goal thriller against Algeria on Tuesday evening.

Rayners marked the end of the international break in style by adding his name to the scoresheet for Bafana Bafana during the country’s 3-3 FIFA Series friendly draw against North African giants, Algeria, on Tuesday.

Themba Zwane had earlier given South Africa a 2-1 lead heading into the half-time break, with Rayners playing an important off-the-ball role for the second goal, but that advantage was canceled out by Yacine Brahimi shortly after the restart.

The lead would soon be restored, however, when Elias Mokwana fired a powerful effort at goal that decisively deflected off the Stellenbosch striker and beyond the reach of Algeria goalkeeper Moutspha Zeghba.

Rayners’ all-important touch saw him credited with his second international goal, having previously scored for Bafana Bafana during the 2023 COSAFA Cup, and gave Hugo Broos’ side something to hold onto heading into the final stages of the match.

His strike ultimately did not prove to be a match-winning effort though, as Yassine Benzia scored his second of the night for the Desert Warriors to restore parity and ensure that the two countries walked away with a share of the spoils.

Rayners is now set to return to Stellenbosch later this week ahead of the Maroons’ upcoming DStv Premiership match against Royal AM, where he will be looking to add to the seven goals he has scored in the competition so far this season.
