Steve Barker has hailed his side’s clinical performance in front of goal after advancing to the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals with a 6-1 win over Milford FC.

Stellenbosch FC advanced to the last-eight of the Nedbank Cup on Friday evening after recording a resounding 6-1 win over Motsepe Foundation Championship side Milford FC in Durban.

Devin Titus, Anicet Oura (2), Andre de Jong (2), and Mervin Boji all wrote their names onto the scoresheet as the team from the Cape Winelands recorded their largest-ever cup win to progress in the competition.

“The message before the game started was that we need to start the match really well,” Stellies head coach Steve Barker said after the encounter.

“When you play teams from the lower divisions it is important that you impose yourself early on in the game and don’t give them the feeling that they may have an opportunity.

“We executed this very well in first 20, 25 minutes when we kept the ball and moved it around really well, especially on the left-hand side where we had some good overloads and penetration, getting in behind.

“I thought we deserved the two-goal advantage that we had and at that point, the half looked like it was done and dusted and that we would be going in at 2-0.

“Then we conceded a sloppy goal and all of a sudden you don’t have that advantage anymore, but fortunately Oura immediately scored his second goal, a goal of good quality, to restore that advantage which I thought was important.

“We came out for the second half with a similar message, not to let them back into the game, and Andre de Jong’s two quick goals after half-time killed the game off. After that, it was just about managing the game.

“They had their moments but on transition we looked dangerous and likely to go and score a sixth, which we did eventually. It was a very clinical performance, we looked good in front of goal and took our chances very well.

“…To be honest, I didn’t expect to get six goals but when it does come right and you take your chances like we did, it’s good for us and for the strikers and their confidence,” Barker added.

“Oura scored two really good goals, De Jong scored two good ones as well and that’s good for us, so while the scoreline was perhaps a little bit unexpected I thought we deserved to score the goals we did with the way we played.”

Stellenbosch FC will discover their opponents for the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup on Monday evening when the draw takes place at the SuperSport studios. The draw will be televised live on SuperSport 202 from 18h00.
