Barns on target as Stellies complete league double over AmaZulu

Football Betway Premiership 2024/25 Stellenbosch Fc V Amazulu Danie Craven Stadium

Stellenbosch FC climbed to third in the Betway Premiership standings after recording a 1-0 win over AmaZulu at Danie Craven Stadium on Tuesday evening.

Stellenbosch welcomed AmaZulu to town for a highly anticipated league encounter which was ultimately decided by a first-half goal from Sanele Barns.

Captain-on-the-night Fawaaz Basadien whipped in a corner from the far side, which was not dealt with by the opposition defence, and it was Barns who reacted quickest to score from a tight angle.

His strike was enough to earn Stellies all three points and saw the team from the Cape Winelands record a domestic double over AmaZulu, having claimed an emphatic 5-0 triumph in the reverse fixture earlier this year.

The result also saw Stellenbosch climb back to third place in the league standings as the club continues to push to secure qualification for next season’s CAF Confederation Cup tournament.

Indeed, continental football comes back into focus for Stellies this weekend when they travel to Zanzibar for the first leg of their Confederation Cup semi-final against Tanzanian giants Simba SC.
