Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has called on his side to keep raising the bar after being held to a goalless draw by Richards Bay on Saturday.

In the third of three matches away from home in eight days, Stellenbosch FC travelled to Umlazi in Kwa-Zulu Natal to face Richards Bay in a Betway Premiership encounter at King Zwelithini Stadium.

Stellies had previously recorded wins over Chippa United in the league, and AmaZulu in the Carling Knockout, but couldn’t make it three wins out of three against the Natal Rich Boyz who earned a share of the spoils.

Despite the result, head coach Steve Barker revealed that he was proud of the start his side had made to the season and that his disappointment with the result stemmed purely from the club’s ambition to continuously improve.

“Every year, every day in fact, you want to be better,” he said.

“After five games this season, we probably have more points than we had at the same stage last season, and people forget that we’ve already played 14 games this season [across all competitions]. We’ve won nine of those, drawn three, and lost two…

“We’ve raised the bar and I think we are maintaining that level. If we want to be who we want to be, we’ve got to keep raising the bar and our expectations and demand excellence from everybody day in and day out.

“Hence, there is a little bit of disappointment in today’s performance. We weren’t good enough to have won the game and we need to find ways to ensure that in these types of situations, and on days like today, we find a way to win.”
