Stellenbosch held to draw by Kaizer Chiefs at FNB Stadium
Stellenbosch FC left FNB Stadium with a point in the bag after being held to a 1-1 draw by Kaizer Chiefs in the Betway Premiership on Tuesday.
Returning to competitive action following the end of a three-week international break, Stellenbosch FC travelled to Johannesburg to take on Kaizer Chiefs in a highy anticipated league encounter on Tuesday evening.
The team from the Cape Winelands created the first chance of note in the 21st minute when Sinoxolo Kwayiba came close to opening the scoring, but his effort struck the upright with Chiefs ‘keeper Renaldo Leaner beaten.
Amakhosi responded well though, and fashioned an opportunity of their own on the half-hour mark when Wandile Duba forced a strong point-blank save out of Stellies captain Sage Stephens.
Half-time came and went, and it was the Maroons who started strongest in the second stanza, with Kwayiba making amends for his earlier miss by opening the scoring just two minutes after the restart.
The 26-year-old showed good movement to connect with Man of the Match Terrence Mashego, who picked him out after an excellent run down the left flank, before firing his side ahead in the encounter with a well-taken finish.
However, that lead lasted just 10 minutes as Chiefs midfielder Mduduzi Shabalala levelled matters at the other end, sending Stephens the wrong way with a composed finish in the box.
There were half chances for both sides as the match wore on, with Stellies surviving a late penalty appeal for alleged handball in the box, but neither side was ultimately able to find the winner.
