Barker: Form goes out the window in derby matches
Head coach Steve Barker has called for passion, commitment, and consistency from his side ahead of Tuesday’s derby against neighbouring Cape Town Spurs.
Stellenbosch FC will make the short trip to the DHL Stadium in Cape Town on Tuesday evening where they will take on Cape Town Spurs in a highly-anticipated DStv Premiership encounter.
The clash will be the first meeting between the two sides* who face contrasting fortunes this season, with Stellies in seventh position on the log and on a six-match unbeaten streak across all competitions, and Spurs rooted to the foot of the table.
Despite this, head coach Steve Barker is taking nothing for granted ahead of the tie and insists that form counts for little in derby matches of such magnitude.
“It’s a very important match for the club this evening against Cape Town Spurs,” Barker said.
“When you play derbies, form goes out the window. It’s all about the passion and commitment to get a positive result, but it’s also important for us to continue with the momentum we currently have in the league as it’s a massive three points on offer.
“We know that it’s not going to be easy because Cape Town Spurs will be desperate to get a result and they will look at this match at home as an opportunity to do so.
“So, it’s important for us to have that consistency that we have shown of late, to be ruthless and to make sure that we play to our full potential to get maximum points.”
Kick-off for the encounter is scheduled for 19h30 and the match will be broadcast live on SuperSport PSL channel 202.
