Sage Stephens has revealed his pride after winning the Stellenbosch FC Footballer of the Season and Sportsman of the Season accolades at the Club’s end-of-season awards ceremony.

Stellenbosch FC captain Sage Stephens walked away with the crown jewel at the Club’s award ceremony on Tuesday after being named Footballer of the Season in recognition of his performances throughout the 2025-26 campaign.

“It’s very special, and it came unexpectedly,” Stephens said. “It was nice to be nominated for a few awards on the night, but to get the big one is special, especially in the context of the season that we’ve had as a club.

“It’s nice to know that certain performances that helped the team throughout the season were highlighted and contributed towards me getting this award. It’s nice to get the recognition.”

Stephens’ award sees him join the likes of Iqraam Rayners (2019 and 2024), Robyn Johannes (2020), Deano van Rooyen (2021), Zitha Kwinika (2022), Junior Mendieta (2023), and Fawaaz Basadien (2025) on the honours board.

The 35-year-old was also awarded the Sportsman of the Year title for the second season running – the first player to win the award on multiple occasions – in further recognition of the role he plays at the Club beyond the playing field.

“A lot of the time, people don’t see what happens off the field and behind the scenes, and the work that goes into making sure the squad is together, pulling in the right direction, and staying motivated even when things might not be going our way.

“It’s not why you do it, but it makes it all the more worth it to get these special awards, which I am incredibly grateful, honoured, and privileged to receive.”

“Some great players have worn this badge and carried the Stellenbosch badge forward. We heard throughout the evening what this Club has achieved over the last 10 years, so it’s very special to be part of that.”
