Hunt: Stellenbosch geared up for tough Richards Bay clash

Stellenbosch FC coach Gavin Hunt is hoping his side can pick up where they left off before the international break when they take on Richards Bay in the Betway Premiership on Tuesday.

The Maroons recorded a 2-1 win over Chippa United towards the end of last month to extend their unbeaten run to eight matches in the Betway Premiership, before taking a short break as the domestic campaign paused for the March international break.

Hunt and his charges have since returned to training and jetted off for Richards Bay this week, where they are set to take on the challenge of the Natal Rich Boys at the uMhlathuze Sports Complex on Tuesday evening.

“We’ve had a few days off after our last game, but we’ve come back and had a good week’s training. Obviously, we’d prefer to play games because FIFA weeks do break momentum and rhythm sometimes, but we just want to pick up where we left off and go again,” Hunt said.

“We’re unbeaten in a few games in the league, but that means nothing now. We need to carry on and try to get through all these away games. We’ve got Richards Bay, Polokwane City, and Mamelodi Sundowns in our next three games, which will be tough for us.

“…Richards Bay also don’t lose many games at home. They beat Kaizer Chiefs and have had some big victories at their home ground, so it’s not going to be easy. They’re a totally different side at home, but a win for us would help us jump into the top eight.

“We’re looking for that final push now with these last eight games. We’ve taken 16 points from our last eight games, which is two points a game, so if we do the same, we’ll definitely make the top eight, but it’s going to be tough with the games coming up.

“Right now, we are focusing on taking it one game at a time, though, and not getting too far ahead of ourselves. Richards Bay are a good team, and we need to give a solid performance, play nice and compact, and take it from there.”
