Stellenbosch FC bowed out of the CAF Confederation Cup after playing out a goalless draw against Singida Black Stars.

Stellies’ continental campaign came to an end on Sunday after the team played its final Group Stage encounter against Singida Black Stars in Cape Town on Sunday, with both sides having already been mathematically eliminated prior to the tie.

Despite the match effectively being a dead rubber, Stellies looked to exit on a high and came close to opening the scoring in the first half through Langelihle Phili, whose mazy run through the box ended with his shot being cleared off the goal-line.

Muzomuhle Khanyi’s effort was similarly blocked from the rebound as the Tanzanians held on to half-time, and they would be the happier side after Asekho Tiwani was dismissed for a second bookable offence just before the break.

That numerical advantage almost played its part as Singida broke clear twice early on the second half, only to be denied by the last-gasp heroics of Stellies’ captain and goalkeeper, Sage Stephens.

Despite being a man down, though, Stellies pushed forward with opportunities of their own and were unlucky not to find the breakthrough as Ashley Cupido and substitute Omega Mdaka both put half-chances wide.

Ultimately, there was no separating the two sides, who had to settle for a share of the spoils for the second time, having played out a 1-1 draw in the reverse fixture in Zanzibar late last year.

Stellenbosch FC will be in action again on Wednesday evening when the Club returns to Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch to take on Magesi FC in a Betway Premiership encounter.

Stellenbosch FC starting XI: Stephens (C), Nkwali, Stanic, Lebusa (46′ Mthiyame), Tiwani, Palace, Mokobodi, Kodisang (46′ Mdaka), Phili, Khanyi (46′ Butsaka), Cupido
