Hunt: Singida clash will be a good exercise for Stellies squad

Stellenbosch FC coach Gavin Hunt is looking to use Sunday’s CAF Confederation Cup encounter against Singida Black Stars as an opportunity to fine-tune his squad for the remainder of the season.

Stellenbosch welcome Tanzanian side Singida Black Stars to DHL Stadium in Cape Town on Sunday, where the team will wrap up its CAF Confederation Cup campaign for the 2025-26 season.

Semi-finalists in the competition last season, Stellies have fallen out at the Group Stage this time around after suffering a defeat to AS Otoho in Congo last weekend, but that exit is an opportunity to focus elsewhere, according to Hunt.

“We all know the situation, but for me, it gives us, and me personally, a chance to look at the players available in our squad and give a few more of them a run,” he told the media during Saturday’s pre-match press conference.

“We will try to use it as a good exercise for the upcoming fixtures, which certainly be tough, and we’re going to need everybody given our league situation.

“We would have wanted more to be riding on this game, which didn’t happen because of the last two or three games, so it’s disappointing from that perspective, but we can use it as a good exercise.”

Singida are similarly unable to progress to the next round, making Sunday’s a tie a dead rubber in effect, but Stellies’ boss is still hoping to see a good performance from his squad on home soil.

“If you’re a good professional, you’ll treat the game with respect,” he added. “I always say, any game of football you must treat with respect. The game owes you nothing, but we owe everything to football.

“We need to treat it with respect and play properly. There are a lot of players who need to prove to me that they deserve to play more regularly, and a game like tomorrow will certainly tell me that.

“There are also a couple of players who came in late in the transfer window who need a bit of match fitness, and these types of games are good for that as well, and hopefully to get some minutes and mileage in the legs for what’s still to come.”

The CAF Confederation Cup fixture between Stellenbosch FC and Singida Black Stars kicks off at 18h00 on Sunday, 15 February 2026 at DHL Stadium. The match will be broadcast live on SABC Sport. Tickets are available for R40 from Webtickets.
