Mthetheleli Mthiyane is hoping Stellenbosch FC can draw inspiration from last season’s CAF Confederation Cup success when they host 15 de Agosto de Akonibe at Athlone Stadium on Sunday.

Semi-finalists during the 2024-25 campaign, Stellenbosch will be hoping to deliver a strong showing in the CAF Confederation Cup again this season, but must first overcome the challenge of Equatoguinean side 15 de Agosto in the 2nd Preliminary Round.

The two sides are set to meet at Athlone Stadium in the second leg on Sunday afternoon after previously playing out a goalless draw in the first leg, in an encounter played under challenging conditions at Ebibeyin Stadium in Equatorial Guinea.

“We are feeling good ahead of the game,” Stellies midfielder Mthiyane said in the build-up to the fixture. “I think everyone is ready for it because we want to do what we did in the competition last season and let history repeat itself.

“When we went to them, it wasn’t easy because of the pitch, and the travelling, and a lot of other things, but we are at home now in front of our fans, so we have to dominate. We need to be more aggressive, create more chances, and look to dominate the game from the start.

“As I mentioned, last season’s achievement is a motivation for us. It showed that it’s possible for us to go far and that we have the players who can take us there, and that’s what we are fighting for.”

The CAF Confederation Cup 2nd Preliminary Round 2nd Leg encounter between Stellenbosch FC and 15 de Agosto de Akonibe will kick off at 15h00 at Athlone Stadium. Tickets are available at R40 from Webtickets outlets.
