Stellenbosch FC’s DStv Diski Challenge coach Evangelos Vellios has been named an assistant coach for the Carling All-Star team, which will play in a Carling Black Label Cup exhibition match against 2024 Carling Knockout champions.

Vellios led Stellenbosch FC to the DStv Diski Challenge crown last season – the club’s second title in the competition in the last three seasons – and once again has the side top of the table at Christmas break this time around.

His management of the Young Maroons has not gone unnoticed after he was selected to be one of the assistant coaches for the upcoming Carling Black Label Cup encounter, where he will serve alongside David Notoane as one of two deputies to Orlando Pirates’ head coach, Jose Riveiro.

They will lead a 23-man All-Star squad made up of a mixture of 11 senior and 12 reserve team stars from across South Africa, although no Stellenbosch FC players from either level were selected to take part this time around.

The Carling Black Label Cup match between Magesi FC and the Carling All-Star team is scheduled to take place on Saturday, 21 December 2024, and will be played at Orlando Stadium in Soweto.

Last season, Stellenbosch FC were defeated in the Carling Black Label Cup by the All-Star team after suffering a 2-1 defeat at Peter Mokaba Stadium, with Mervin Boji scoring for the Maroons and Ashley du Preez and Mfundo Vilakazi on the scoresheet for the exhibition team.
