Stellenbosch Football Club progressed to the next round of the CAF Confederation Cup after recording a 5-0 (8-0 aggregate) win over Nsingizini Hotspurs on Saturday afternoon.

Having recorded a 3-0 win over their opponents from Eswatini in the first leg of their First Preliminary Round encounter last weekend, Stellenbosch FC made the most of their advantage by romping to a 5-0 (8-0 aggregate) win in the return fixture on Saturday.

Lehlogonolo Mojela got the ball rolling for the Maroons in the 10th minute when he scored his first goal for the club since arriving from TS Galaxy, heading home after Andre de Jong’s initial effort had been parried by opposition ‘keeper, Sibusiso Dlamini.

Langelihle Phili, on his full debut, was next to find the back of the net when he dribbled into the box and fired an unstoppable left-footed effort past Dlamini.

It was a case of more of the same in the second half as Stellenbosch continued to attack with relentless intensity, and their efforts were rewarded shortly after the break when Andre de Jong scored the club’s third.

A dangerous free-kick caused confusion in the box and resulted in De Jong being left unmarked at the far post, where he was on hand to tap the ball into the back of an open net.

A brief lull ensured but Stellies were soon back on the front foot, and Omega Mdaka, on as a substitute to make his professional debut, extended the lead late in the tie when he drilled a powerful effort into the bottom corner.

With the seconds ticking down on the clock, there was still time for one more, and fellow substitute Mervin Boji made no mistake with his effort, hitting the target to earn the team from the Cape Winelands a resounding 5-0 win, and an 8-0 aggregate victory of the two legs.

Saturday’s victory means Stellenbosch have advanced to the Second Preliminary Round of the CAF Confederation Cup, where they will next face Congolese giants AS Vita.

Further fixture information regarding that encounter will be communicated to the public in due course.
