Vellios not getting carried away in hunt for DDC title

Coach Evangelos Vellios is keeping his troops grounded ahead of Stellenbosch FC’s potential DStv Diski Challenge title-clincher against Moroka Swallows on Saturday.

With just two matches remaining for the season, Stellies’ reserve team currently hold a three-point advantage over Mamelodi Sundowns at the top of the DStv Diski Challenge standings and could clinch the title with a win over Swallows provided Sundowns fail to win in their encounter against TS Galaxy on Sunday.

Despite this mathematical advantage, Stellies coach Evangelos Vellios has insisted that his side will take nothing for granted when they come up against the Dube Birds at Dobsonville Stadium in Soweto.

“We have two games left and have a three-point advantage so that is good, but we have a tough game away against Moroka Swallows,” Vellios said following last weekend’s win over Kaizer Chiefs.

“Football can be a cruel game, so we just want to give it the respect that it deserves by preparing well and making sure we don’t get carried away.”

“It’s very hard to win the title and it will likely go down to the last day to determine the champion – I hope not but it likely will.”

Vellios’ side most recently recorded a 3-0 win over Chiefs at home during last weekend’s Asidlali festival in Stellenbosch, with in-form forwards Mervin Boji and Thulani Mini once again on the scoresheet for the team from the Cape Winelands.

The Young Maroons, who previously lifted the Diski Challenge trophy following the 2021/22 season, will kick off Saturday’s encounter at Dobsonville Stadium at 10h00 in a non-televised fixture.
