Stellenbosch FC reserves coach Evangelos Vellios is preparing for a fight when his side takes on Chippa United in the DStv Diski Challenge this weekend.

On the back of another successful DStv Diski Challenge festival in Idas Valley, Stellenbosch, last week, in which Thulani Mini fired Stellenbosch to a 1-0 win over Orlando Pirates, the Young Maroons travel to Gqeberha this weekend to take on the challenge of Chippa United.

Last weekend’s victory over Pirates saw Stellies draw level with the Soweto-based side at the top of the log and Vellios reveals that he is pleased with his side’s accumulation of points at this stage of the season.

“We are very proud to be on 32 points, joined at the top of the log with Orlando Pirates,” he said. “This is testimony to the quality of the footballers in the squad who week in and week out put on amazing performances, we have gone on 11 games unbeaten, recording nine wins.

“This past weekend, it was a special occasion to conclude the round by playing at home against Orlando Pirates, and by winning that game with such amazing support.”

Despite his side’s impressive form, Vellios is taking nothing for granted when his side travels to the Eastern Cape, where they will face a Chippa United side in good form of their own, having defeated AmaZulu 3-1 at the festival in Idas Valley last weekend.

“Although we have gone 11 games unbeaten we don’t let us distract us from our objectives and goals. We know how we want to get to those points and we focus on that, we don’t really look at the log.

“We aren’t shaken by winning or losing games because we are process-driven and we focus on what we can focus on, which is playing at our best and defending the colours of Stellenbosch FC.

“There are usually a lot of goals in games against Chippa, it is hard and challenging because they are well organised,” he concludes.

“We won’t look at the log for this one as we know we are facing a tough game. We have prepared very well and will go in with a lot of humility and respect for our opponent. We are ready to fight for what we want and that is to win another football match and perform at the best of our ability.”

Kick off for the match is scheduled for 10h00 at the Wolfson Stadium in Gqeberha.
