Barker aiming for all three points against TS Galaxy

Football - 2023 MTN8 - Semi Final 2nd Leg - Orlando Pirates v Stellenbosch - Orlando Stadium - Soweto

Steve Barker is hoping to see his side return to winning ways when Stellenbosch FC take on TS Galaxy in the DStv Premiership on Wednesday evening.

Stellenbosch will welcome TS Galaxy to the Danie Craven Stadium on Wednesday in a tie that could see the hosts leapfrog their opponents in the DStv Premiership standings with a victory on the night.

“I think it’s a massive game and an important one for us to get maximum points from,” Barker said ahead of the match. “We’re not where we want to be on the log table currently so it’s a very big game for us.

“Preparations have gone well and the players are eager to get that win at home so that we can go into the FIFA break before the Carling Cup with three points and having got to that 10-point mark.

“We’ve been working hard and preparations have been good, we had a good session on Monday and another on Tuesday to just fine-tune some things and we’ll be ready to go on Wednesday.”

Due to the international break set to take place later this month, Wednesday’s match against the Rockets is the first of only three fixtures for Stellenbosch in October.

“We’ve had quite a hectic start to the season with being involved in the league and MTN8 campaigns, so October does bring a bit of relief and an opportunity to improve and work on certain things,” Barker added.

“We’ve also had a couple of injuries to come of our key players of late so it gives them a chance to recuperate, get back to fitness and come back into contention again.

“You also want to be playing at the same, and one big effort against TS Galaxy is needed then we can get back to regenerate and recoup and start working for the rest of the month and what will be a big November and December for us.”

Away from the DStv Premiership, Stellenbosch’s U-18 team were crowned champions at the Engen Champ of Champs tournament in Johannesburg on Monday in what Barker described as a proud day for the club.

“We’re massively proud of the achievement and of coach JP [Jean-Pierre Farrugia], his coaching staff, support and the players,” he concluded.

“For us to be winning a tournament like that is massive for us as a club and shows that our development structures are starting to pay off. We’re very proud of their achievement and it’s well deserved.”
