Stellenbosch FC have been crowned champions at the 2023 Engen Champ of Champs tournament after defeating Mamelodi Sundowns on penalties.

Having won the 2023 Western Cape leg of the Engen Knockout Challenges earlier this year, Stellies’ Young Maroons went one step further on Monday by claiming national honours at the 2023 Engen Champ of Champ competition.

Jean-Pierre Farrugia’s side emerged victorious from the final following a 1-1 (5-4) penalty shootout win over Mamelodi Sundowns to add Stellenbosch FC’s name to the tournament’s prestigious honours roll for the first time.

Langelihle Phili, who already held the unique distinction of having won the Engen Knockout Challenge in Kwa-Zulu Natal (with AmaZulu) and the Western Cape in one season, was named the Player of the Tournament and the Striker of the Tournament.

Connor de Vries walked away with the Goalkeeper of the Tournament accolade for his heroics in goal while Farrugia earned the Coach of the Tournament gong after leading his side to triumph.
