Makhanya: Stellenbosch FC will always remain in my heart
Olwethu Makhanya has penned a heartfelt farewell to Stellenbosch FC after completing a transfer to Major League Soccer club Philadelphia Union.
Makhanya was on Tuesday announced as a new signing by Major League Soccer side Philadelphia Union in a landmark move that saw the 19-year-old defender become the first Stellenbosch FC player to complete a transfer to the United States.
Following news of his impending departure, the 2023 Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player penned an open letter in which he thanked Stellenbosch FC, his former teammates, and the club’s supporters for the respective roles they played in his development.
“I would like to thank Stellenbosch FC for the opportunity they gave me and the great confidence that was shown in me,” Makhanya said in a post shared across his social media pages.
“It is with mixed emotions that I bid farewell to the team. I have enjoyed working with you all and have made many fond memories during my time here.
“An incredible team that will forever remain in my heart, where everyone received me as a family member, showed me love, helped me grow as a player and especially as a person.
“I’m very lucky to have been part of not just a great team but great human beings with huge hearts.
“It is with great pride that I have accepted a new challenge and as I leave the club. I would like to wish the team and everyone all the best in the next seasons.
“With much love and gratitude,
“Olwethu Makhanya.”
Makhanya made 24 appearances for Stellenbosch FC during his maiden season in the Cape Winelands, and became the club’s youngest-ever goalscorer in the DStv Premiership when he scored his solitary goal for the club in the 5-2 win over Golden Arrows in April this year.
