Júnior Mendieta has completed a permanent transfer to Mamelodi Sundowns.

Stellenbosch Football Club can confirm that an agreement has been reached with reigning DStv Premiership champions Mamelodi Sundowns for the transfer of Júnior Mendieta.

The Argentine midfielder departs after three seasons in Stellenbosch where he scored 15 goals in 79 appearances across all competitions, including a joint-club-record 14 goals in the DStv Premiership.

Mendieta quickly established himself as a fan-favourite during his stay in the Cape Winelands as a result of his tenacity, ability on the ball, and goal-scoring acumen, all of which aided the club’s cause on the pitch in recent times.

The 30-year-old was instrumental in Stellenbosch achieving a club-record fourth-place finish in the league during the 2021/22 campaign and featured prominently to help fire the team to a first Nedbank Cup semi-final last season.

“Thank you for the opportunity and the love that you have given me all these years,” Mendieta wrote in an open letter to the club’s supporters on Wednesday.

“I think I have done my job very well and I have always given my best, and that leaves me at ease. I will always carry Stellenbosch in my heart and be grateful for all the love and affection they gave me and my family.”

The club would like to thank Mendieta for his dedicated service and wish him all of the best in the next stage of his career.
