Stellies secure top six position with season-finale victory
Stellenbosch FC enjoyed a winning end to the season with a hard-fought win over TS Galaxy on Saturday.
Steve Barker’s side consolidated their status as a top eight outfit in the DStv Premiership, and with it a spot in Next season’s MTN8, by recording a 2-1 win over TS Galaxy at the Danie Craven Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
The guests had an early opportunity to take the lead in the opening quarter of an hour but saw an effort cleared off the line by Jayden Adams before Devin Titus struck just minutes later at the other end.
Fawaaz Basadien fired in a free-kick which eventually found its way to Titus, who made no mistake in firing his side into the lead.
That advantage held until the half-time break but Galaxy hit back soon after through Lindokuhle Mbatha who leveled matters after being assisted by Bernard Parker on the counter-attack.
The dust had barely settled on the goal, less than a minute to be precise, when Junior Mendieta rose highest to head Stellies back into the lead following a great ball in from Basadien.
Mendieta’s goal remained the difference by the time the referee called the game to an end, ensuring that Stellies claim a vital three points and qualification to next year’s MTN 8 competition.
