Wonderboy Makhubu’s first goal for Stellenbosch FC helped the team from the Winelands earn a hard-fought point against TS Galaxy on Friday evening.

Stellenbosch FC welcomed TS Galaxy to Danie Craven Stadium on Friday for a high-stakes Betway Premiership encounter, with just one point separating the sides in the league standings heading into the tie.

Matters got off to the worst possible start for Stellies as Zimbabwean striker Junior Zindoga broke clear and opened the scoring for Galaxy within the first minute of the encounter.

The Rockets might have had a second goal soon after were it not for the interventions of Man of the Match Mosa Lebusa, who was called upon twice to make vital interventions in the box, including a last-gasp goal-line clearance just before half-time.

That wasn’t the last chance of the half, though, as Gavin Hunt’s side came close to finding an equaliser on the brink of half-time when Ira Tape pulled off a fingertip save to deny Wonderboy Makhubu his first Stellenbosch goal.

Makhubu was not to be kept off the scoresheet for long, however, as shortly after the restart, he latched onto a cross from Devin Titus to head home and level the scores for the Maroons.

Neither side seemed content with a point thereafter, and chances flowed at both ends, with Mpho Mvelase heading over for Galaxy before Kazie Enyinnaya mirrored his attempt at the other just six minutes later.

Despite a frantic end to the encounter, neither side was ultimately able to find the breakthrough by the time the referee blew his whistle, leaving coaches Hunt and Beganovic to settle for a share of the points.

With the result, Stellenbosch remain ninth in the league standings, but the Maroons extend their unbeaten run in the competition to six matches, dating back to December last year.
