Stellenbosch FC endured a disappointing evening at Danie Craven Stadium after suffering a 1-0 Betway Premiership defeat to Richards Bay.

Returning to Danie Craven Stadium for the first time in nearly a month, hosts Stellenbosch FC welcomed Richards Bay to town on Saturday evening for a highly anticipated Betway Premiership encounter.

A first half notably short of chances ultimately ended in Richards Bay’s favour when a challenge outside the box saw the ball fortuitously fall to Siyanbonga Nzama near the centre circle. The striker stayed strong under pressure from Sanele Barns and kept his composure to give his side the lead on the stroke of half-time.

Following the interval, Stellies came out strong in search of an equaliser and came close to finding it within just minutes of the restart. Phili, playing down the left wing, whipped in an inviting cross that was cleared at the last minute with Devin Titus waiting for a tap-in at the far post.

Steve Barker’s side continued to push forward in search of a leveller, with the likes of Barns and Langelihle Phili, and substitutes Bradley Mojela and Lesiba Nku, pushing forward with frequency, but the final ball or moment of magic was not forthcoming.

Ultimately, Nzama’s solitary goal stood as the difference on the night as Richards Bay emerged victorious, leaving Stellenbosch with work to do ahead of the club’s next league match.
