Stellies quartet named in SA’s prelim squad for U-20 FIFA World Cup
Stellenbosch FC’s Langelihlie Phili, Sivwe Nkwali, out-on-loan forward Faiz Abrahams, and goalkeeper coach Morne Crumpton have been named in South Africa’s preliminary squad for the 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile.
The quartet, who were all part of the squad that helped South Africa win the CAF U-20 Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in May, have once again been included in coach Raymond Mdaka’s provisional 30-man selection for next month’s global showpiece.
They feature alongside former Stellies defender and academy product Tylon Smith, who recently completed a move to EFL Championship side Queens Park Rangers after being named Player of the Tournament at the aforementioned AFCON competition.
The 2025 FIFA U-20 World Cup is set to take place between 27 September and 19 October in Chile, where South Africa’s Amajita have been drawn alongside one-time champions France, the United States of America, and New Caledonia in Group E.
South Africa will host a World Cup preparatory Camp from 1-10 September, which includes two training matches, before Mdaka announces his final squad on 12 September.
In other international news, Stellenbosch FC’s Thabo Moloisane, Devin TItus, and Ashley Cupido have also been called up to the provisional Bafana Bafana squad for the senior team’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Lesotho and Nigeria.
