Stellenbosch FC’s Sanele Barns and Athenkosi Mcaba have been called up to the South Africa squad to compete in the 2025 COSAFA Cup tournament.

Hosts South Africa will get their 2025 COSAFA Cup campaign underway on Wednesday afternoon when they take on neighbours Mozambique in a Group A encounter at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.

Stellenbosch defender Athenkosi Mcaba, who competed with South Africa at the 2022 and 2024 editions of the competition, and midfielder Sanele Barns, who has earned his first call-up, are among the 23 players who will represent the national team at the tournament.

South Africa’s 2025 COSAFA Cup Group A fixtures:

• 4 June 2025: South Africa vs Mozambique
• 7 June 2025: South Africa vs Zimbabwe
• 10 June 2025: South Africa vs Mauritius

Elsewhere this month, a separate Bafana Bafana squad will be taking on Tanzania and Mozambique in two international friendlies as preparation for the country’s ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the upoming CAF Africa Cup of Nations tournament.

Stellies’ Fawaaz Basadien, Ashley Cupido, and Thabo Moloisane have been included in Hugo Broos’ selection for those matches, which are scheduled for 6 June and 10 June, respectively.
