Deano van Rooyen became the first player to feature in 150 competitive matches for Stellenbosch FC when he took to the field for Saturday’s DStv Premiership clash against Sekhukhune United.

Home-grown hero Deano van Rooyen, who is already Stellenbosch FC’s most-capped player of all time, wrote his name into another chapter of the club’s history books by becoming the first player to feature in 150 matches across all competitions.

Did you know? Van Rooyen is also the only Stellenbosch FC player to have made 100+ DStv Premiership appearances

The marauding full-back made his debut for the Maroons in the club’s first-ever match back in 2016, featuring as a substitute at the age of 19 against Mthatha Bucks, before helping the team earn promotion to the DStv Premiership just three years later.

Now 27 years old, Van Rooyen is the vice-captain and on-field captain at the club, and famously led the team to its first-ever cup triumph last year when he lifted the 2023 Carling Knockout trophy in Durban. His 150th outing followed in Saturday’s goalless draw against Sekhukhune United.

He is expected to once again lead the team out onto the field this coming weekend when Stellies play host to SuperSport United at Danie Craven Stadium in the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals. Tickets are on sale here.
