Stellies honour Andries at tree-planting ceremony

In commemoration of the first anniversary since Oshwin Andries’ passing, Stellenbosch Football Club hosted a memorial service and tree-planting ceremony in honour of the former South Africa youth international.

Andries, who made 11 first-team appearances for Stellenbosch FC after graduating from the club’s academy, tragically lost his life on 4 February 2023, merely 20 days shy of what would have been his 20th birthday.

This past week marked a year since the Stellenbosch-born defender’s untimely demise and the club commemorated the occasion by planting a tree and unveiling a new bench in his honour at the club’s base within the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport.

The event was attended by Andries’ mother, Natasha, and loved ones, Klapmuts ward councilor JC Anthony, representatives from the various Stellenbosch FC supporters branches, and players and staff from the club, among others.

SFC General Manager Garth Le Roux also announced that the club and its various partners will be hosting a youth tournament in Klapmuts on 24 February, the day on which Andries would have celebrated his 21st birthday. Further details to be confirmed in due course.

During his playing career, Andries was part of Stellies’ DStv Diski Challenge and Premier League Next Gen-winning sides in 2021, before breaking into the first team at the age of 18.

There, he made 11 appearances across all competitions and became the club’s then-youngest-ever top-flight goalscorer when he scored his only senior goal against Royal AM in August 2022. The number 25 jersey he wore that season was posthumously retired last year.

Forever in our hearts, forever No. 25.
