Stellies earn point on the road in goalless draw against Arrows

Stellenbosch FC earned a point on the road after being held to a 0-0 draw by Golden Arrows in their DStv Premiership encounter on Saturday.

Returning to domestic football following the September international break, Stellenbosch traveled to the Mpumalanga Stadium in Hammarsdale to take on Golden Arrows in a league fixture.

In what proved to be a tightly-contested affair, neither side was able to grab an early foothold and Stellies’ first chance of significance came toward the end of the first half when Iqraam Rayners fired a free-kick inches over the cross-bar.

Following the half-time break, it was the hosts who were out of the blocks quickest and they fired an effort on goal through former Stellies striker Ryan Moon, but his shot was well saved by Maroons ‘keeper Sage Stephens.

Play was then temporarily halted shortly after the hour mark when captain Deano van Rooyen suffered a head injury following an accidental collision with teammate Sibongiseni Mthethwa  The skipper was replaced by Basil Mphahlele who made his debut for the club, having joined on a free transfer at the start of the season.

A series of half-chances materliased for both sides in the final half-hour but it was Stellies who came closest to claiming the win at the death. With time running out, Rayners fired an effort at goal which curled over the crossbar and out of play, as both teams had to settle for a draw.
