Stellies U-18 captain embarks on US college journey
Former Stellenbosch FC U-18 captain Hagan Cupido has completed a move to the United States of America where he will further his education while playing college football for Tyler Junior College in Texas.
Cupido joined Stellenbosch FC in 2019 when he was 15 years old after the club hosted its first-ever open trials to establish the Youth Academy.
Cupido took this chance to prove that he has what it takes to be a Young Maroon and was quickly selected to be part of the club’s 2019 Bayview Cup squad.
The following year he was chosen to be the captain of the U-16 team, but unfortunately, the COVID-19 Pandemic hit and the league could not continue.
Although there were no more training sessions at Stellies, Cupido persevered and did football exercises and school work religiously, and he was able to make his DStv Diski Challenge debut at the end of 2020 against AmaZulu FC at Idas Valley Stadium in Stellenbosch.
Cupido continued to play for the Stellies U-18 side and went on to captain the team to triumph at the Kapstadt Cup at the end of 2022, whereafter he was permanently promoted to the DDC squad.
Born and raised in the Cape Winelands, it was always Cupido’s dream to become a professional footballer, but he knows that his education is equally important.
Therefore when the opportunity arose for him to play college football and study in the USA, it was an easy decision. Picking the fruits of his hard work both on and off the field, Hagan truly represents what Stellenbosch FC stands for, “More Than Football”.
Cupido has officially joined Tyler Junior College in Tyler, Texas where he will study a two-year Business Management course and play Division 1 soccer.
“I would just like to thank everyone at the club for the opportunity and trust that was shown in me and that I’ll forever be grateful.”
Everyone at Stellenbosch FC would like to wish Cupido all the best on his new journey abroad!
