Three Stellies players nominated for PSL awards
Three Stellenbosch FC players have been nominated for accolades across four categories at this year’s PSL awards ceremony.
The Premier Soccer League on Thursday announced the final nominees for the 2022/23 PSL awards to reveal that three Stellenbosch FC players had been shortlisted for personal accolades.
That tally includes striker Iqraam Rayners who has been nominated for the Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament gong after scoring a tournament-high six goals across four matches as Stellies reached the semi-final of the competition for the first time.
Rayners will be up against Sekhukhune United defender Edwin Gyimah and Orlando Pirates midfielder Miguel Timm, who will meet in the final of this year’s tournament later this month.
Elsewhere, promising defender Olwethu Makhanya has been nominated for separate awards, including the coveted DStv Premiership Young Player of the Season prize. Makhanya, who celebrated his 19th birthday last month, broke into the Stellies first team at the start of this season and has been a regular in the starting XI ever since.
He is also in the running for the Nedbank Cup Most Promising Player award alongside teammate Devin Titus, who scored arguably the best goal of the tournament during the club’s 6-3 Round of 16 victory over TS Galaxy.
The winners will be announced on Sunday, 28 May 2023 from 20h00 with the ceremony set to be broadcast on SuperSport PSL channel 202 and SABC 1.
