Sekhukhune United emerged victorious after Juan Ortiz’s penalty was saved.
Steve Barker’s side fell agonizingly short of a spot in this year’s Nedbank Cup final at Loftus Stadium after suffering a 0-0 (4-3) penalty shootout defeat to fellow first-time semi-finalists Sekhukhune United on Sunday evening.
Stellies were made to rue a number of missed opportunities during regulation time, including two separate efforts from Junior Mendieta and Devin Titus which rebounded off the post, as the match ended goalless after 90 minutes.
Another 30 minutes of football ensued and Sekhukhune United threatened late with an effort that was blocked on the goalline, but there was still nothing to separate the two sides after extra-time, meaning a penalty shootout would be needed to determine this year’s finalists.

Goalkeeper changes were made at either end for the shootout, with Ntokozo Mtshweni coming on for Badra Ali Sangare for the guests and Sage Stephens for Lee Langeveldt for the hosts, and both ‘keepers made an early impact.
After Víctor Letsoalo scored the night’s first penalty for Babina Noko, Mtshweni saved Iqraam Rayners’ spot-kick, before Sage Stephens restored parity by keeping out the next effort from Sibusiso Vilakazi.
The two sides then traded two successful penalties each before Pogiso Mahlangu netted an all-important fourth for Sekhukhune to put the pressure on Stellies and their final spot-kick taker, Juan Ortiz.
Ortiz was unable to follow suit and saw his penalty saved, leaving Sekhukhune United to progress to the final where they will meet Orlando Pirates later this month.
Stellenbosch FC would like to congratulate and wish both Sekhukhune United and Orlando Pirates all of the best for the upcoming Nedbank Cup final.
