SFC bags 3 points in Cape Town Stadium

The Stellenbosch Football Club bagged an all-important three points in the Cape Town Stadium on Tuesday when the team beat Ubuntu Cape Town 2-1.

Ashley du Preez and captain Jarrod Moroole scored the goals for SFC. The halftime score was 0-0 and the match game alive when Du Preez scored a brilliant goal. Ubuntu struck back almost immediately though. Stellenbosch took the lead again when captain Moroole hit the back of the net. The last 10 minutes of the match were extremely tense for both teams. Ubuntu really wanted some points – sitting bottom of the National First Division log – and made the Stellenbosch players defend with all that they had.

“It was a tough game. Both teams went out to win it. We dominated the first half without scoring and that is something we have been working on really hard,” said SFC coach Steve Barker.

“It took a great goal from Ashley du Preez to unlock the game, but after Ubuntu scored it still could have gone either way. The last 10 minutes Ubuntu made it really difficult for us and I am happy with the way my players responded.”

According Barker getting back-to-back victories in the NFD is really tough, but very important. “It would be amazing to get two wins from two matches in what is a really tough league. But that is what we want so we will work for it.”

The three points are vital for SFC. “The win today is extremely important. I believe our previous matches warranted more points and we were frustrated with our position on log. So it is a huge three points for us.”

For this weekend’s home game against Real Kings tickets can be bought at the Idas Valley Stadium. Tickets are R10 for seating on the grass embankment and R20 for grand stand.
